The 92nd Scripps National Spelling Bee Preliminaries and Finals were held from May 28 to 30, 2019. Each year more than 11 million students participate in the contest, but in 2019 only 562 spellers made it through to the final round. The ages of those vying for the top spot ranged from 7 to 15-years-old and the students represented grades 1 through to 8. All 50 U.S. states were represented in 2019, but Texas boasted the most representatives. An impressive 69 spellers came from The Lone Star state. The majority of contestants attended public schools and nine sets of siblings competed for the honor of becoming the champ. All of the students were competing to scoop up the total $52,500 cash prize and an engraved trophy. Other perks of being a National Spelling Bee winner include a trip to New York to appear on ‘Live With Kelly & Ryan’ and a jaunt to Los Angeles, California to appear on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’
