Jewel — Pics
Jewel is one of the biggest stars of the mid-90s. Born Jewel Kilcher in Payson, Utah, Jewel grew up in Anchorage, Alaska. As a youth, she quickly discovered a love for music and performed alongside her dad as a father-daughter duo. It was around this time that she learned how to yodel. After earning a partial scholarship to the Interlochen Arts Academy in Interlochen, Michigan. After graduating, she relocated to San Diego. For a time, she lived within her car, traveling to gigs. It wasn’t all fun, as she was once rendered homeless when her boss withheld a paycheck after she refused his sexual advances. At this lowest of lows, she was discovered playing in a coffee shop, and a bidding war followed. The resulting debut album, Pieces Of You, was one of the biggest releases of the decade. It was certified 12x platinum, and contained singles, “You Were Meant For Me,” Foolish Games,” and “Who Will Save Your Soul.” Nearly three decades later, Jewel remains a powerhouse pop culture icon.
