You may be jamming to Karol Conka, 29, after the 2016 Olympics opening ceremony in Rio, because she is set to give anyone watching a real treat with a buzzed about rap performance. The Brazilian beauty with incredible pink hair, is opening the games with slew of other artists, but all eyes and ears seem to be gravitating her way. In honor of her performance, we round up five things to know about the rapper!
1. Karol was born in Curitiba, Brazil and is one of Brazil’s most prominent female rappers.
With her sultry pink hair, Karol is a force in the rap game, especially in Brazil. Born Karoline dos Santos Oliveira, the artist has a sound that’s a blend of pop, R&B and Brazilian music. She had her first show in high school, and that’s where she became “Karol with a K,” she told Refinery29.
2. She dropped her first album in 2013.
Karol put out “Batuk Freak, which earned her Brazil’s prestigious Multishow Best New Artist award for 2013,” Rolling Stone said of the rapper. Her hit “Boa Noite” has over 3 million views on YouTube!

3. A lot of Karol’s lyrics are about self-esteem, and real experience.
“I talk about self-esteem a lot in my lyrics, but just not in a typical way,” she told Refinery29. “A big illness in women and people in general is self-esteem. It’s a lack of loving oneself. I’ve been through some low self-esteem myself. So, I was determined to help others through my music.
She even talked about doubters. “In my childhood I was discriminated against often. This thing of, ‘you can’t do that.’ As a black woman living in the ghetto, I thought, I must have something interesting that other artists don’t have,” she said. “Not having fit those preconceptions gave me strength and I resisted.”
4. She rehearses her music in her “favorite place”…
A room that triples as an office, closet and a dressing room, she told the site. She calls it the “three-in-one.” She creates music there and looks in the mirror while she writes.
5. Speaking of her closet, she has a pretty awesome wardrobe and unique style to boot.
As seen in her amazing Instagram photos, she wears a lot of prints. She told the site she has a lot of “golden stuff.” She even admitted she likes to “look weird.” We love that Karol does her own thing and doesn’t care what other people think! You go, girl!
