Kirk was best known as an actor. He appeared in over 92 films at the time of his death at the age of 103 in Feb. 2020 and was highly respected by his fellow actors and all those involved in the film industry.

He made his film debut in ‘The Strange Love of Martha Ivers’ in 1946 and went on to appear in many other well-known titles, including ‘Champion’ in 1949, ‘Young Man With a Horn’ in 1950, and ‘Ace in the Hole’ in 1951. 

In 1996, he received the Honorary Award at the Academy Awards for his 50 years of work in the film industry and it was one of the most prestigious awards among the many he received in his career. 

In addition to acting, Kirk was known for his philanthropy work. It included funding his high school’s musical ‘Amsterdam Oratorio’ in 2001 as well as donating to many other organizations with causes that were dear to his heart. Some of them were for the rebuilding of better schools, helping the homeless, and helping those with Alzheimer’s disease. 

Kirk had fours sons, including Michael Douglas, another well-known actor, Joel Douglas, Peter Douglas, and Eric Douglas.
