Rihanna founded the event in 2014, named after her grandparents Clara and Lionel Braithwaite. The initial ball was held in Dec. of 2014 at The Vineyard in Beverly Hills, California. RiRi has since moved it to New York to coincide with Fashion Week in September. The money raised at the event goes to everything from cancer care centers to education causes. It specifically includes residents of her native Barbados and other surrounding Caribbean nations, but has since expanded to include worldwide causes. As a result of her philanthropy, Rihanna was named Harvard University’s “Humanitarian of the Year” by the Harvard Foundation in 2017. She always draws an A-list crowd for the Diamond Ball, and with so many celebs in town for fashion week it is always one of the hottest tickets in town and a must-do red carpet.
