Samira, who is of Lebanese and Trinidadian descent, hails from Montreal, Canada. She moved to New York City in the early 1990’s to pursue her post secondary education at NYU, where she began building a career in the fashion industry. Beginning as an intern at Vogue magazine, Samira nabbed the role of being editor Grace Coddington’s assistant. She went on to work at a number of publications, including InStyle, serving as fashion director at Vanity Fair and Elle. In June 2020, amid the Black Lives Matter movement, Samira was announced as the first woman of color to lead Harper’s Bazaar magazine. “My lens by nature is colorful and so it is important to me to begin a new chapter in Bazaar’s history by shining a light on all individuals who I believe are the inspiring voices of our time…I see you, I thank you, and I hope we can join forces to amplify the message of equality, because Black Lives Matter,” she said in a video after the announcement.
