On May 24, 2022, an 18-year-old male opened fire on Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas. The shooter, Salvadore Romus, killed 19 students and two adults, per Yahoo! News. The shooter was killed by responding officers. Salvadore was a resident of Uvalde and was a student at a nearby school. It was reported that Salvadore first shot his grandmother and then drove his own vehicle to the campus. He used a handgun, but the type is not known as of this writing.
During a press conference, Gov. Greg Abbott expressed his sorrow over the tragedy. ‘When parents drop their kids off at school, they have every expectation to know that they’re going to be able to pick their child up when that school day ends. And there are families who are in mourning right now,’ he said. ‘The state of Texas is in mourning with them for the reality that these parents are not going to be able to pick up their children.’
