March marks Women’s History Month, a time to reflect on the accomplishments and impact that women have had on the world. For Millennials – those born between 1981 and 1996, – there are certain women whose music has defined the pop mainstream world. From Beyonce to Lady Gaga to Taylor Swift, there are a handful of prominent women whose music has provided the soundtrack to the Millennial experience. It’s impossible to credit every woman who has provided a major influence on mainstream Millennials – shout out to Robyn, Lizzo, and Rebecca Black — here is a look at some of the stars that have helped shape a generation. Be it Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, and Ariana Grande graduating from Disney to pop superstar, or Katy Perry refusing to be anyone but her bright, colorful self, or Halsey showing that pop can have some edge, these are some powerful women making some powerful music.

Perhaps one of the biggest influences on the Millennial experience when it comes to pop music, Taylor Swift has grown up to become one of the generation’s most beloved music icons. She showcased her own growth in 2020 with evermore and folklore, the latter of which was a critically-acclaimed success.

Katy Perry gets patriotic. Though her star power has dwindled, her influence has not. Katy Perry, with her songs “Firework” and “California Girls,” has been a major presence in millennial pop music.

Beyonce is arguably the biggest influence on the millennial pop perspective. She grew up from her girl group days as part of Destiny’s Child to become a successful solo star before transforming into a cultural and artistic icon.
